This is a bit off brand from my usual blog posts, but my daughter just turned 6 and wanted a kitty cat-themed birthday party, and it was too fun not to share! She says she loves cats because she is collecting stuffed animal cats. I’m not sure if she would still love them if she had a real one, but possibly!
Here’s what we did to stay on budget but make it fun!
Decorations:
1.) I kept it simple (and cheap) by just using pink plates, silverware, cups, and napkins that I found at Walmart. On the cups, I drew a kitty face. For the table runner, I used some wrapping paper that I found at the dollar store.
2.) Instead of buying a whole set of cat decorations, I bought these super cute masks for only $10 that doubled as table decorations until the girls sat down for cake.
3.) For the centerpiece, I wrapped up yarn into a balls and placed one of my daughter’s stuffed cats on top. I just got the yarn from the thrift store.
Cake:
4. I’m not so fancy with my cake making skills. If you are, there are a ton of cute ideas on Pinterest for cat cakes. This is what I ended up doing because it was inexpensive and easy! Just a simple box cake mix and some frosting made two little cat faces!
Games:
5. We did an “Adopt A Kitty” station for the girls to work on as everyone was coming in. They also doubled as party favors! I put the boxes together with the cats inside beforehand, so every child got to choose a box and decorate it with markers and stickers.
You can get the boxes here and the cats here. Because these were the party favors as well, I didn’t feel too bad spending a little extra for them ($20 for a dozen).
6. We added on to the kitty cats by making collars for them. I just got some ABC beads from the dollar store so that the kids could choose names for their cats. The beads went on pipe cleaners on onto the cats. It was easier than trying to do it with string!
7. We played the classic revision of pin the tail on the donkey except we made it pin the party hat on the cat.
8. This was a fun game that the kids enjoyed! I got the idea from NestlingDesign.com. I basically wrapped up and taped tiny toys or bows or erasers one-by-one in streamers until it formed a ball. For the game, I played music from my phone as the kids passed the streamer-ball around (think hot potato). When the music stopped, the child holding the ball got to unravel the streamer ball until she discovered a toy. Everyone got a turn to get a toy. I just used little toys that my kids had, but I’m sure you could find some at the dollar store for cheap!
9. The last game I also got from the site that I mentioned above and had the kids get into two teams. Each team got one of the yarn balls that I had made for the centerpiece (we did this game after the cake). Every child had to take a turn pushing the yarn balls with their nose down the room and back until one of the teams won.
Party Favors:
10. The party favors were the adopted cats, so I didn’t need to worry about anything else!
Happy Cat-Partying!
